Hints about cleaning a window

Here are a few hints that apply to most windows.

  • Windows should not be cleaned on a frosty day nor in full sunshine.

  • Curtains should be removed or pinned out of the way and the floor and wall protected.

  • Vacuum to remove loose dirt before wiping with a damp cloth.

  • Clean the windowsills and frames before the glass. They should be dusted using a chamois leather wrung out of water. Another cloth or chamois should be used for drying.

  • Clear dirt in the corners of the windowsill with an old toothbrush dipped in a homemade fungicide to stop black mold which results from a combination of condensation and dust from growing back so fast.

  • Stop drips running down your arm when washing above your head by pinning a strip of old towelling around your wrist.

  • When cleaning inside, lay a towel on the windowsill to catch dripping solution.

  • Use  crossways strokes for inside and vertical strokes for outside then you can tell which side is smeared.

  • Your drying technique and materials affect the final appearance more than the kind of cleaner.

  • Use a soft, lint free cloth, a linen piece of cloth works great.
